Some of you may recall my endorsement of a little free application called WinSnap a while back that I have been using for months to create the Snapshots of all of my charts & spreadsheets.

At the time, all I was looking for was some way of quickly capturing a small portion of the screen instead of the whole window as happens when using PrntScreen. WinSnap met those criteria and you couldn’t beat the price!

But I’ve recently progressed to the point of wanting to edit some of these charts and pictures. Be it by adding additional trendlines, arrows, or annotations. So what I have been doing is saving the picture then opening up MS Paint, editing it further, then re-saving the picture. It got the job done but could be VERY time consuming if there were a lot of charts I wished to analyze.

So I did a search to see what programs were out there that would allow me to accomplish these 2 tasks (Picture Capturing & Picture Editing) simultaneously. Then someone over at the TradeStation help forum recommended SnagIt, and boy am I ever grateful!

It has all of the basic picture capture features of WinSnap up at the top (User-Defined Region, Window, & Full Screen). But what makes me qualify it as the “Best Little Trading Tool Ever” are the following features:

SnagIt Editor: After taking a picture, a preview page appears in the editor that allows you to add any desired annotations or graphics before saving
Scrolling Window to PDF: Will convert an scrolling page to a .pdf document. Very handy for saving good articles
Record Screen Video: Allows you to create a video (with sound) of whatever you do on the screen. Great for educational videos!

Those are just the features that I’ve found a use for as of yet as there are many others included: But these more than adequately suit my meager needs at the moment. SnagIt is shareware and costs $40 to register. However, you can:

Download it Here

and try it out FREE for 30 days before it will ask you to register the product. I’m still in my free trial but for $40, you can’t beat its functionality.

FYI: As this is the first shareware product I’ve plugged I feel it necessary to state that I am in no way affiliated with SnagIt nor will I profit whatsoever if you choose to try out their product, I’m just one happy trying to help out other traders who may be looking for something similar.

Ever since I started trading, I have been obsessed with trying to learn everything I can about myself and my own trading habits so that I can most productively focus my efforts and grow as a trader. This spreadsheet is the product of these efforts. A special thanks to my oldest sister Kathy over at Strategic Link Consulting for giving me some great ideas on how to improve this spreadsheet.

At the end of every day I review every single one of my trades (Winners & Losers) to see what kind of mistakes I am making most frequently and how much they are costing me. This has allowed me to objectively quantify the volume & value of of my most frequently occuring errors. Since my attention span is not yet infinite, this has allowed me to create a game plan for the following trading day focusing on those errors which have historically costed me the most in missed profits or extra losses.

This is why I evaluate my winners AND my losers. For sometimes good trades make money & bad trades lose money. That is why you will see some columns on the end marked Good, Bad, & Ok. This is where I can mark those trades that I should not have entered. This is NOT based on performance but based upon my entry criteria. For it would entirely be possible to have all good trades for a day and lose money or conversely to make all bad trades and make money. But in the long run, when I fail to follow my plan & make bad trades, those are the ones that lose the most money. The OK column is used when I’m on the fence either because I made a small mistake but caught it early and was able to mitigate it or because I’m not yet sure whether or not an error did in fact occur.

The orange columns are entirely modifiable so you can customize the spreadsheet with your own list of “most-frequently-occuring errors”. At the bottom of each colum are rows including the Total # of Times an error occured, The Total Cost of the Error, & The Average Cost of the Error per Occurance. The EpT # is the merely the average # of Errors that occurs accross Bad & OK trades only. This is because sometimes my plan allows for making a counter-trend fade and thus it could still qualify as a Good trade, while at other times it is very much bad. I like to keep track of all of the occurances for record-keeping purposes & for the Averages at the bottom, but not for making course adjustments.

My only hope is that it can give other traders even a fraction of the help its given me.

In addition to the Help Files, there are 5 main worksheets to the spreadsheet:

Trade-Data: Where trades and relevant data are entered.
Daily Results: Where all relevant statistics are automatically calculated and displayed for quick viewing
One Row Stats: Same stats as in the Daily Results except they are all in one row. This makes daily, weekly, monthly comparisons possible and much easier than before.
Custom Setup: Worksheet where you can customize Trade & Error types to suit your personal methodology
Distribution Statistics: Where you get to take an x-ray of your trading results and really see graphically when & where your most profitable & costliest trades lie. Stats are broken down by : Time of Day, Type of Trade, & # of Converging Factors

See below for screenshots of entire workbook.

Futures Values Spreadsheet

I just finished working on a spreadsheet that incorporates the futures information found on Atticuspartners.com along with the symbol lists from barcharts.com. So now you can have a quick & easy reference for nearly all the major futures contracts that are traded in the United States as well as their $ values on a per tick basis plus their symbols for when you want to look up their charts.

A quick note regarding some of the symbols. Many of them are both floor traded and electronically traded. So when you see two symbols in the same row, one with parenthesis & one without, one is floor & one is electronic.

Clock Optimization Programs

Atomic Clock Sync

For traders out there who rely heavily on short-term candlestick & bar chart patterns, it is easy to become conflicted sometimes about whether or not to enter a trade now or wait until the bar/candle closes. We’ve always been told to wait until it closes for confirmation but sometimes it is possible to get a head start on a move if you enter a few seconds earlier before the next candle opens.

My problem was that I could never keep my computer clock’s time in sync with the exchange time so I never knew how much time was really left until the next 1, 2, or 5 minute bar opened; It was a chronic guessing game.

But then I talked to my friend Bill over at Viper Speed Trading and he recommended I download the Atomic Clock Sync utility. Its a very small (and FREE) program that allows you to ping the world-time server and automatically adjust your PC’s clock to the millisecond so that it matches the exchanges around the world.

I can’t recommend the utility enough as now my charts are always up to date & I don’t have to do any more guessing!

You can learn more about it and

from WorldTimeServer.com

Enjoy!

Topmost Clock

So after I stopped having to worry about my clock being on time I ran into a different problem. It just seemed as if my clock’s location wasn’t very convenient for quick glances in the midst of scanning charting setups on multiple monitors. So I did a quick search and found this handy little program called Topmost Clock.

What it does is allow you to put a little transparent clock anywere you’d like on your computer. I place mine on my main computer up at the top of my monitor right in between the 2 charts that I spend the majority of my time watching during the day. This has greatly reduced my eye strain when making multiple quick glances at the time as it is now in the same field of view as the charts I spend most of my time watching anyway.

This program is also free. You can read more about it and
